Goal planning
As the main point of creating and setting a goal is to help you move from where you are to where you want to be, usually either personally or financially. One of the most common goals we come across is people wanting to become debt free, but not knowing where to begin this process.
If you set goals and stick to them, you can achieve all the things you want in life. Generally people who set and achieve their goals are people who’ve decided what they want, and having committed themselves to going for it, haven’t let anything get in the way.
This first step to achieving your dreams or goals is to write them down. Now take a look at what you have on paper. Remember to always make your goals achievable, because if you make them too hard to reach the chances are you will give up along the way.
Once you have your list of realistic goals, the second step is to put them into a time frame that you feel you can maintain or to put it another way make them into bite sized chunks.
For instance
Main goal: I want to become debt free
- My first goal may be to stop being reliant on credit cards in the next 6 – 12 months.
- I want to make more than the minimum repayment each month in the next 12 – 18 months.
- I want to have my credit card debts repaid in the next 5 years. (obviously this depends on your individual circumstances).
A realistic goal gives you all the incentive you need to achieve it. Don’t forget to build in some rewards along the pathway for yourself.
